Can You Live in Your Aliso Viejo Home During a Repipe? Water, Noise and Daily Routine

Most Aliso Viejo families stay home through a repipe. What the water shutoff schedule looks like, which rooms are affected, and how to plan around kids, pets and work.

The first question many Aliso Viejo homeowners ask after "do I need a repipe?" is "do we have to move out?" For almost every house, condo and townhome we work on in Aliso Viejo, the answer is no. You can sleep at home, cook dinner most nights and keep your routine, as long as you know when the water will be off and which rooms we will be working in.

Why staying home usually works here

Aliso Viejo was built mostly in the late 1980s and 1990s, so homes in Glenwood, Pacific Ridge, Wood Canyon and the Aliso Commons area tend to have similar layouts: one or two stories, a garage on the ground floor, and plumbing walls stacked around kitchens and baths. That predictable layout lets us plan the work room by room instead of opening the whole house at once.

What a typical day looks like

On most homes the water is only off during working hours. You come home to running water, a working toilet and a clean kitchen at night.

Rooms you will want to clear

We need access to the walls behind sinks, tubs, showers, toilets, the laundry hookup and the water heater. Before we start, it helps to:

  1. Empty the cabinets under sinks
  2. Move furniture and wall art about three feet away from plumbing walls
  3. Clear a path through the garage to the main line and water heater
  4. Put away anything fragile on shelves that share a wall with a bathroom

Kids, pets and working from home

Repipe days are busy and a little loud. Cutting small access openings and drilling through framing makes noise in short bursts. Families with young children often plan a park day at Aliso Viejo Ranch or a trip to grandma's for the noisiest afternoon. Dogs and cats are usually happier in a closed bedroom or at daycare, since doors to the garage will be opening often. If you work from home, pick a room without plumbing walls and we will schedule around your calls where we can.

Condos and townhomes

In attached homes we coordinate with your HOA on any shared shutoffs and on parking for our truck. If a shutoff serves more than one unit, the association usually wants notice for the neighbors, and we help you plan that ahead of time.

When moving out briefly makes sense

A short stay elsewhere can be the easier choice if someone in the home has a medical need for constant water, if the only bathroom is being worked on all day, or if you simply prefer quiet. That is a personal choice, not a requirement.

After the new pipes are in

Once the new PEX-A lines pass their pressure test and inspection, the access openings are patched. You may notice a little air in the faucets for a day or two; that clears quickly.
